CABARRUS ARTS COUNCIL TO PRESENT
WORKSHOP ON TEACHING WITH THE RHYTHMIC CONNECTION

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18

Educators will play drums, learn African dances and make their own Kanga cloth at a free teacher workshop presented by the Cabarrus Arts Council.

The workshop, Teaching with the Rhythmic Connection, will take place Tuesday, October 18, 3:30-5:30 p.m., at the new arts council offices at the Historic Courthouse, 65 Union Street S, Concord.  It will be led by the Magic of African Rhythm, an African dance and drumming group that is performing for students in grades 3 through 5 in the arts council’s Students Take pART in the ARTs program.  Teachers may receive .2 hour CEU credit for completing the workshop.

Teachers will explore the ways they use rhythm daily as they engage in dance and drumming and learn new ways to integrate rhythm in lessons.  In the second part of the workshop, they will learn to use “visual rhythm” via the East African Kanga, a decorative stamped cloth.  Teachers will end the workshop by making their own Kanga.

The workshop is part of the arts council’s Students Take pART in the ARTs program which brings a professional performing arts program to every grade level each year.  The program is made possible by arts council sponsors CT Communications, First Charter and The Independent Tribune.  The Magic of African Rhythm will perform its program, An African Day, for local students in grades 3-5.

The arts council will offer a total of five teacher workshops this school year, and by attending all five arts council workshops, teachers may earn a full hour’s CEU credit.   Actor David zum Brunnen will present the next one, Building Character by Creating a Character, on Monday, November 7, 3:30-5:30 p.m.  Zum Brunnen’s EbzB Productions will present a musical cabaret, War Bonds:  Songs and Letters of World War II, to high school students that week.
