September 29 Pops in the Park to Feature Jazz Orchestra

The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra’s rained out Pops in the Park concert has been rescheduled for Friday, September 29, at Frank Liske Park.
Pops in the Park is organized by the Cabarrus Arts Council and the Cabarrus County, Concord and Kannapolis parks and recreation departments. It is made possible by arts council sponsors CTC, First Charter, The Independent Tribune and Pops media sponsor WDAV 89.9 classical public radio.  The concert will begin at 6 p.m. with a bluegrass preshow by Jeff Whittington and John Culbreath.  The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra will take the stage at 7:30 pm.
The jazz orchestra will take concert-goers through the years of big band and jazz music in Big Band Cavalcade.  Composed of 18 of the finest jazz musicians in the state, the orchestra will showcase some of the most celebrated compositions and arrangements of the Big Band Era, including Glenn Miller’s String of Pearls, Artie Shaw’s Stardust, Tommy Dorsey’s Sunny Side of the Street and Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing.  Also included will be beloved Big Band vocals, including It Had to Be You and Just in Time.  For more information about the orchestra, please visit www.ncjro.org.
Local favorites Whittington and Culbreath will start off the evening with bluegrass standards.  Whittington, who  performed on the Grand Ole Opry when he was just 14, plays banjo, pedal steel, dobro and guitar.  Culbreath, who has played with bluegrass greats Vassar Clements and Mac
Wiseman, plays fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo. Seating for the concert is on the lawn.  Concert-goers are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and picnics.  Pets should be left at home, and alcohol is not permitted in the park.  Limited food and beverages will be available from vendors.
